In the launch of his new blog series featuring Art and Photography Tips, Freelance Photographer and Videographer Ben Quinton shares simple tips for improving your outdoor photography. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or a total newbie: Quinton hopes you’ll find inspiration for your next photoshoot with these tips!

Pay Attention to Your Location
When taking photos outdoors, you won’t always have the choice of setting. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most out of the nature around you! Ben Quinton recommends that you pay attention to your surroundings (which is always great advice anyway). Look for areas that might serve as a good backdrop. While you’re at it, look for areas that you’ll want to avoid, too. Keep in mind that lighting can always change in a natural setting. Make the glow of the sunlight work to your advantage — without getting in the eyes of your subject!
Master the Visual Art of Natural Backlight
What is backlight?
Freelance Photographer Ben Quinton explains backlight as a lighting technique in both photo and video. In short, it is when a light source shines from behind a subject. Natural backlight is a technique achieved when you position your subject in between the photographer’s camera and the sun. The result makes for a beautiful glow that highlights and accentuates your subject. This works great for taking photos of still subjects, people who are not in motion and animals whose moves you can predict long enough to snap a photo! But be careful: too much backlight can become intense.
